History

At Baguley Hall, we aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and develop a secure understanding of chronology and the passage of time. Through carefully sequenced learning, children explore significant events, people and changes over time, developing an appreciation of how these have shaped their own lives and the world they live in.

Beginning in the Early Years, children develop an awareness of their own personal history. They explore how they have changed over time, learn about their families and begin to understand how daily life and routines evolve. This early foundation supports their understanding of chronology and prepares them to think historically.

Our history curriculum is structured around four key themes: Monarchy, Technology, Conflict and Settlements. These themes provide a clear framework that enables children to build knowledge progressively and make meaningful connections across different periods of history.

Through the theme of Monarchy, pupils learn about significant rulers and leaders, exploring how their decisions have influenced Britain and the wider world.

Through Technology, children examine how inventions and innovations have transformed daily life, communication, travel and industry over time.

Through Conflict, pupils investigate wars, invasions and civil unrest, considering causes and consequences and how these events have shaped societies.

Through Settlements, children explore how communities have evolved and developed throughout history. They learn how people have lived in different periods and how geography has influenced where and how people settle.

Across all themes, children develop their ability to investigate and interpret the past by asking questions, analysing sources and forming reasoned conclusions. They build a broad base of historical knowledge, strengthen their chronological understanding by placing events within a clear timeline, and learn to communicate historically, using appropriate vocabulary to explain change, continuity, cause and significance.

History at Baguley Hall is taught on a two-year rolling cycle, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum while allowing pupils to revisit and deepen their understanding of these key themes over time.
